INOVAÇÕES TECNOLÓGICAS E TRANSFORMAÇÕES NO JORNALISMO COM AS REDES DIGITAIS
Although the activity of communication (and journalism in particular) is directly conditioned by structures and technological processes, the term 'innovation' has had little influence in academic studies. This gap is even more significant if we consider that the field of communication is part of Social Applied Sciences, therefore closer to a practical and operational dimension of knowledge. Likewise, it is important to realize that, since the creation of media industries in the Nineteenth Century, the technology has been one of the key milestones for the structuring of these media companies and their routines of production and circulation of products. The aim of this paper is to investigate the reasons for this gap between ‘innovation’ and academic studies. Journalism is a social activity that can be directly benefited by the application of scientific knowledge in developing new processes and products, as well as stimulates an understanding of specific innovative procedures. We also intend to demonstrate that, with new patterns of journalistic production based on the new technologies of communication and information, the technological factor has been the capacity of structuring new journalistic practices, especially in digital networks environments. Therefore, technological innovation is central in these transformations, but theoretically fragile in an academic perspective.
