INNOVATIONS IN THE CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SECTOR PROVIDED BY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Advances in information technology, with the development of computers with large processing capacity and access to the internet, which allows data fast flow, has allowed communication between machines and also between machines and humans at speeds compatible with celerity of actions in the various areas of knowledge management. The processes involving machine-machine and human-machine communication have become known as the Internet of Things or IoT. Given the importance of civil engineering for everyday life in cities, whose management has direct effects on the safety of buildings and other urban infrastructures. It’s important seek reliability and optimization for the construction processes, monitoring and periodic maintenance. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to identify innovative management opportunities in civil engineering through emerging information technologies from the internet to IoT. This is done through exploratory study through the search in national and international journals and databases of patents. Among the main technologies developed for the application of IoT in engineering / civil construction, the following stand out: BIM, BEACONS, RFID and robotics, although the greatest number of applications have been identified using only the term internet, since IoT is quite recent. BIM technology was the fastest growing application. In addition, the number of patents using robotics, 3D printer and drones was still insignificant. Finally, China stands out on the world scene, with 51.3% of the world's total deposited patents until 2018.
