USE OF NATURAL PRODUCTS FOR THE TREATMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES: TECHNOLOGICAL FORECASTING
Abstract
The use of natural products show great dimension and awareness through empirical application of
herbal medicine among the population. These products are often in testing for efficacy in several
diseases, among them infectious diseases that pose serious public health problems. The present
study aimed to conduct a prior art search and provide an overview of the current state of
technological development related to the use of natural products for the treatment of infectious
diseases. The survey was conducted based on the patent applications filed in 4 banks of data
analyzed , namely , National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of Brazil , the European Patent
Office (EPO), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and World Intellectual
Property Organization (WIPO) . After research it was found only 20 patents , showing that in 2008
had the highest number of deposit and the United States stand as the largest depository , and
demonstrating the most abundant international classification A61K was that these preparations for
medical purposes , dental and / or hygiene . However, it was observed that there is a small number
of patents, an increased interest in the use of natural products in these diseases, which has
manifested increasingly being required.
