UNIVERSITY SPIN-OFF AS A MECHANISM OF TRANSFERING TECHNOLOGY FROM THE UNIVERSITY TO THE INDUSTRY
Abstract
The universities are enlarging their functions and increasingly contributing to the local economic development. There is a growing interest among policymakers and academics in generating wealth from publicly funded research. One way of doing this is through the academic spin-offs, that is, companies created to explore an intellectual property generated from a research developed in an university. Those changes in process in the university environment represent a great challenge for the universities, because traditionally inserted in a non-commercial environment they now see each other in a highly competitive context, which force them to act as they were firms. This study aims at to accomplish a reflection on academic spin-offs, presenting its conceptualization, some aspects of the process of creation of university spin-off, the importance of academic spin-offs, and main barriers to its creation.
