Types of Entrepreneurs and their Distinctive Features: a Study in São João Del Rei (Minas Gerais, MG)
Abstract
In order to contribute to the consolidation of national studies that examine variations and distinct
characteristics among entrepreneurs, as well as their influence on the development of urban
contexts, the proposal of the present study emerges. The aim of the study was to investigate types
and distinctive characteristics of entrepreneurs located in the central region of the city of São João
Del Rei (Minas Gerais, MG), taking as a reference the typology of entrepreneurs conceived and
validated in Brazilian urban contexts. Therefore, we sought to verify to what extent typology
initially identified in Tiradentes (MG) and corroborated in Paraty (RJ) has adherence to the reality
of the types of entrepreneurs located in the target city of the study. The research can be characterized as a study of a quantitative nature involving the application of questionnaires with 51 local entrepreneurs. The empirical results reveal the most significant presence of three types of entrepreneurs in the city: modern entrepreneurs do business (45%), followed by traditional native
entrepreneurs (25%) and by avant-garde postmodern entrepreneurs (18%). This result points to the
coexistence, in the same region, of different types of entrepreneurs who have different characteristics in the way they manage their businesses.
