THE WAY IS TO INNOVATE: A CASE STUDY IN A METAL-MECHANICAL INDUSTRY ON THE CONTRIBUTION OF GENERATION Y IN THE INNOVATIVE PROCESS
Abstract
In recente years, innovation has been an emphasis on the business scenario, considering the survival in the market. Companies have increasingly invested in this area and on training staff for the development of new products. Thus, this paper deals with a case study on a mechanical metal industry of the northern region of the Rio Grande do Sul that innovated boldly its product portfolio in recent years. This innovation has been greatly motivated by creative and daring ideas of its employees, who mostly are young people, some of them in management positions. Therefore, the objective of the research was to identify which characteristics of these young managers who have contributed to the product innovation, as well as its importance to organizational performance. To fulfill with the goal proposed, exploratory method was used. The data were collected from interviews, semi-structured type with open questions, aimed at identifying the characteristics of generation Y and how these ones contribute to innovation in the company. The interviews were conducted in June 2015 and analyzed by the content analysis techniques. The results show that the company profile is quite innovative and it's unanimous the importance given to the investment in technology and new product development. The most important features of the youth of generation Y that contributes to product innovation in the company is the creativity, inventive spirit, ambition and dynamism.
