THE USE OF MEDICINAL PLANT IN FIBROMYALGIA TREATMENT: A TECHNOLOGICAL FORECASTING
Abstract
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome with variable symptomatology and great impact to
patients. Its treatment is not always satisfactory and may involve side effects related to continuous
medication. To characterize a worldwide public health concern, many studies have been conducted
looking for new treatment alternatives including medicinal plants. The aim of this study was to
review the patents of medicinal plants used in the management of clinical symptoms of
fibromyalgia. The screening was performed at the European Patent Office, World Intellectual
Property Organization, Derwent World Patents Index and Database of the National Institute of
Industrial Property of Brazil. The most frequent international classes were A61K and A61P.
Republic of Korea, United States and World Intellectual Property Organization were the main
depositors. It was observed an increased number of deposits in the period from 2008 to 2012.
However, when the research was restricted to the treatment of the fibromyalgia syndrome, the
number of patents decreased significantly, making the use of medicinal plants a technological gap
to be exploited.
