THE STAGE-GATE APPLIED TO NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF LEADING COMPANIES IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL
Abstract
The Stage-Gate process is a management improvement tool for activities related to new products development process, which can provide improved performance in shorter products development cycles. This multiple case study aims to describe and evaluate the new products development process methodology used in five metallurgical company of southern Brazil, from a process perspective and to identify the main implications and benefits after its implementation. The results show that the management benefits occurred after the implementation of the Stage-Gate process, through an improved level of communication and interaction between the areas involved, and with more efficiency of the technical market aspects, by reducing the product development cycles and the reduction. The difficulties are related to the definition of criteria for the approval of the gates, and distribution responsibilities of the various teams.
