THE IMPORTANCE OF INNOVATION FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESS EUROPEAN: A STUDY OF MULTIPLE CASES TO EXPERTS IN INNOVATION MANAGEMENT
Abstract
This article results from survey of innovation specialists working in public and private sectors of
countries in Europe in order to verify your perception about the importance of small and medium
enterprises attributed to factors that promote innovation. To that end, was conducted a multiple
case study, based on a conceptual model developed from the seven rules of innovation proposed by
Dávila, Epstein and Shelton (2006). The results suggest that European SME’s have clearly that
innovation must be part of the mentality of the organization, but companies do not have
management practices of creative components and do not have resources needed for R&D sectors, and are poorly structured in relation to the measurement of performance indicators. It was also
revealed a clear division of opinion among respondents in the public sector and the private sector
on issues of strategy and leadership.
