THE IMPORTANCE OF A GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION IN THE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT OF A REGION
Abstract
After obtaining the seal of approval for geographical indications (GIs), the increase in tourism has
been a reality in several Brazilian cities, such as the first IG "Valley of the Vineyards," which
brought many business opportunities and new jobs wine to the region. In addition, other examples can be cited. The present paper discusses the relationship between geographical indications and the
development of tourism in a region. The discussion also provides space for the creation of new
market niches, such as tourism, to be added to the development of a GI adding an important
competitive advantage for producers. The research was based on tours already present in some
GIs, such as the Wine Tourism and Adventure Tourism in Sierra Gaucho Valley of the Vineyards
and the mode of production of cachaça in Paraty (RJ). Therefore, before the analysis, it is
understood that the alliance between Tourism and the Geographical Indications, a guarantee of
success, provided they have adequate planning and public policy for the whole set involved. In the
period 2009 to 2012, the number of GIs in Brazil has grown significantly, and the latest GIs need
support to grow and fulfill its role as an instrument of regional development holds the seal.
