TECHNOLOGYCAL PROSPECTION ON WHEAT BRAN USE IN HUMAN CONSUMPTION
Abstract
Wheat is the second most produced and consumed cereal in the world and its main and most abundant by-product is wheat bran. This by-product is widely used in animal feed, but also should be largely used for human consumption due to their functional effects on human health. The objective of this study was to carry out a prospection based on patent search and thereby provide an overview of technological and scientific development related to the application of wheat bran in food. The survey was carried out at the European Patent Bank, the Bank of the World Intellectual Property Organization, the American Bank Patent and Trademark Office and in the database of the National Institute of Industrial Property of Brazil. The results showed that the development of technologies on the use of wheat bran for human consumption has been growing over the past decade. The main holders and depositors of patents are China, Japan and South Korea. The main storage area is in Section A (human needs), and the subclass A23L the one with the largest number of deposit. A very small number of patents related to arabinoxylan and insoluble fiber was observed, being relevant encourage with more emphasis the development of technologies for these elements due to their functional roles to human health.
