TECHNOLOGY MAPPING OF XANTHAN GUM WITH A FOCUS ON PATENT APPLICATIONS FILED WORLDWIDE FROM 1970 TO 2009
Abstract
Xanthan gum is a commercial biopolymer produced by fermentation of glucose by bacteria of the
genus Xanthomonas, with wide industrial application, mainly for the food industry, pharmaceutical
and petrochemical industries. Due to the economic importance of this polysaccharide, the objective
of this study was to analyze the potential, characteristics and evolution of technological
capabilities, translated by patent statistics, as regards the production and use of xanthan gum and
its industrial applications in the period 1970 to 2009. The term patent document covers published
patent applications or granted patents. The survey was conducted from keywords of the subject and
the codes of the international classification of patents in the database of the European Office, the
Spacenet. The first patent document identified was 1973 with the country of origin as the United
States, which until 2009 had the highest number of patents related to production and application of
xanthan gum. Brazil still has a few patents in the area, requiring more incentives aimed at
increasing the innovative scenario of the country.
