TECHNOLOGICAL PROSPECTION OF ABAREMA COCHLIACARPOS
Abstract
Abarema cochliacarpos, known as barbatimão, is a Brazilian species, notable in folk medicine. Its
bark is used in the form of tea or extract (potions) produced by maceration in white wine or rum to
cure and treatment of gastritis, ulcers, wounds, inflammation and pain, among other uses. In order
to obtain information about the use of technology toward this species, prospecting was carried out
in four databases of patents using three keywords: A. cochliacarpos, Abarema and barbatimão.
Research has shown that there is only one record of a patent which deals with A. cochliacarpos, which approach about a pharmaceutical composition for treating infections caused by the human
papillomavirus (HPV). The remaining patents found were not the focus of this study species, since
other plants also have ‘barbatimão’ as a popular name. Therefore, there is a lot to study on this
species, due to its pharmaceutical potential unexplored.
