TECHNOLOGICAL PROPECTING: APPLICATION OF Punica granatum (Punicaceae) IN MEDICATED PRODUCTS AND FOOD
Abstract
Punica granatum or pomegranate is a plant popular use of which has strong antioxidant activity, which gives properties anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, cicatrization, among others. The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmaceutical or food products from pomegranate through technological prospecting. Patent search was conducted in the databases of the National Institute of Industrial Property-INPI, the European Patent Office - EPO, Office of Patents and Trademarks of the United States-USPTO and World Intellectual Property Organization- WIPO, and research articles indexed in ScienceDirect. The results show that the number of patents has been increasing along the years, mainly in Japan, the majority of patents from private industrial or laboratories, claiming especially antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory different pharmaceutical formulations. Thus, the field for the use of this plant is large and can generate a large number of technological products.
