Technological Monitoring of Second Generation Ethanol Patents
Abstract
The importance of the production of second generation ethanol by countries as one of the
alternative sources to petroleum has been increasing as the incessant search for renewable and less
environmentally polluting energy sources. In this context, it arises the question about Brazil's
performance on the world scene regarding innovations related to this type of ethanol. To answer
this question, this work aimed to present a general and current technological monitoring of patents
linked to second generation ethanol, through information obtained from the patent base of the
National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and the European Patent Office (EPO ), in order to
verify the performance of Brazil in relation to the protection of its technologies with regard to the
theme. In general, it can be seen from this study that patent applications involving second
generation ethanol are still not significant around the world. Especially as Brazil is the largest
producer of sugarcane, it could more effectively take advantage of this fact and develop
technologically with regard to the production of this type of ethanol. According to the EPO survey,
Brazil accounts for 5.17% of the total applications identified. This result highlights the need for the
country to improve its performance in the theme so as not to miss the opportunity to become a
reference in the production of second generation ethanol.
