TECHNOLOGICAL FORECASTING OF BIOADHESIVE SYSTEMS FOR PERIODONTAL DISEASES
Abstract
Periodontal diseases comprise various inflammatory conditions around the tooth and gums with or
without infection, causing discomfort and reduced quality of life for 15% to 90% of the adult population worldwide. To solve this problem the pharmaceutical technology evolved to
mucoadhesive release systems, formulations with fewer side effects and better therapeutic effect
with local application in the oral mucosa. The aim of this study was to perform a technological
forecasting in European Patent Office – EPO, World Intellectual Property Organization - WIPO,
United States Patent and Trademark Office –USPTO and in Brazilian Institute of Industrial
Property-INPI, of mucoadhesive systems developed for periodontal diseases by analyzing the
amount and types of deposits recorded. In this work we realized the technology gap that this field
offers to researchers with only two innovative patents filed in different international banks,
especially on United States. Thus the reality reflects the need of Brazil to fill these technological
gap.
