TECHNOLOGICAL AND SCIENTIFIC PROSPECTION OF PIPERACEAE OF THE STATE OF RIO DE JANEIRO – POTENTIAL STRATEGY FOR CONSERVATION
Abstract
This work aimed to carry out a technological and potential prospection of uses of species of the
Piperaceae family from Rio de Janeiro State, as well as to attract attention for the importance of
this tool to potentiate a conservation strategy. For this purpose, information about species was
prospected in patent databases, verifying its potential for application and use on indicators
associated with patents and elaborated by the authors. Twenty - one species were found to have
patents. A more detailed survey was carried out for black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), because 182
patent deposits were obtained for this plant, a much higher number when compared with the other
Piperaceae species (n = 20). The most expressive CIP for Piperaceae was the A61K. The
applications were diverse and responded positively when comparing their innovation with popular
uses, demonstrating a very useful approach to describe their applications for the strategic process
of conservation of these species.
