SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BIODIESEL WITH LIPID MATERIAL EXTRACTED FROM THE BOWELS OF Sardinella brasiliensis
Abstract
This paper reports the extraction of lipids from the viscera of Sardinella brasiliensis, using organic solvents by the methods (cold and hot). Lipids were subjected to a hydro esterification using iodine as sublimate catalyst. The oil and biodiesel were characterized by 1 H NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, surface tension, density and water and sediment. The results of water and sediment and density were compared to those of the legislation. The results showed that the method of cold provided better yield in the oil extraction, which occurred hydro esterification the indicated material in the 1 H NMR technique by two protons with quartet signal in the region of 4.2 ppm related to methylene hydrogens (CH2 ɑ- O), characteristic mono ethyl esters (biodiesel) and by FTIR technique appearance of axial deformation characteristics esters of 1,742 cm-1. Thus it was concluded that the viscera of sardines are an excellent source of raw material for biodiesel production. Another important factor is the reuse of viscera which are usually dumped at sea or in the dunes.
