PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF PROPOLIS AND RELATED TECHNOLOGIES IN FOCUS IN PATENT DOCUMENTS DEPOSITED IN BRAZIL
Abstract
Propolis is a natural product made from the secretions of trees, flowers, leaves and pollen, and
receives the addition of substances secreted by glandular metabolism of bees. Due to the
importance of pharmacological, therapeutic, scientific and economic of this product, the objective
of this study was to analyze the potential, characteristics and evolution of technological
capabilities, as reflected by statistics of patents filed in Brazil, with regard to processes and
extraction of active compounds of propolis, as well as industrial applications from the development
of new products. The term patent document covers published patent applications or granted
patents. The survey was conducted from the topic keywords in the database of the National Institute
of Industrial Property. The first patent document identified was 1992, and as the country of origin
Japan From the universe of patents filed by residents are 94% and 6% of non-residents. In relation
to protected technology independent inventors are the biggest depositors, then firms and
universities. Although Brazil is one of the largest exporters of propolis, this is not considered an
attractive and competitive market for the protection of this technology by other countries.
