PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF NON-DAIRY PROBIOTICS PROPOLIS IN PATENT DOCUMENTS DEPOSITED IN BRAZIL
Abstract
The present study conducted a prospection to evaluate the national panorama regarding the
protection of new products characterized as probiotics, focusing on non-dairy food matrices. The
data were selected in the databases of the National Institute of Industrial Property, from the
identification of the number of patents found and the relevant information describing the inventions.
One highlight was in the year 2012, when there were 28 applications for patents required. The
companies that made the most patent deposits related to probiotics were companies with 74% of the
orders and the main classes were in the food area, with 26.25% of patents, and the area of
therapeutic activities of chemical compounds or medicinal preparations, with 25%. The largest
number of patent applications for probiotics is in the area of food and chemistry. However, despite
the greater representativeness in the food area, the number of patents related to non-dairy food
products is deficient.
