PROSPECTION OF TECHNOLOGIES RELATED TO METAL BIOSORPTION PROCESS
Abstract
The biosorption process consists in a biological process of retention, removal or recovery of metals
or other compounds from aqueous solutions through passive adsorption or complexation with
active sites present in different materials used as biosorbents. The development of biosorption
processes has been of considerable importance in the last years mainly for application in effluent
treatment processes as well as in recovery processes of precious metals. Due to the importance of
the biosorption process in different areas, this study aimed to analyze the evolution of technological
competence through the analysis of patents in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
database. Between the years 1973 and 2015, 39 patents were filed in Patentscope, with emphasis on
applications for protection in the United States, China, the Republic of Korea, Germany, Russia,
Canada, the United Kingdom and Portugal. The main areas of emphasis in technologies related to
the treatment of water, wastewater, sewage or sludge; as well as the development of chemical
processes and the use of microorganisms. Compared with the number of articles published in the
last twenty years, it became evident that biotechnological innovations involving metal biosorption
have not been protected by patents even though they are also considered an academic product.
