PORTUGUESE TRADITIONAL PRODUCTS: GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION
Abstract
The importance of protection of traditional regional products for local growth and development is now
evident. Considering the differences in regional cuisine and the great variety and quality of traditional
agro-food products throughout the Portuguese Territory, it was necessary to seek to identify the products
with Geographical Indication, seeking to have a vision of how this type of intellectual protection has been
occurring all over the country. It is concluded that in Portugal, this type of protection has already been
carried out, and the search for records has shown more than 100 Geographical Indications throughout the
national territory. All regions of the country presented regional products with Protected Geographical
Indication and the Sausage and Smoked Products had the highest percentage of registrations (32%). In this
sense, a greater incentive to local producers is essential for traditional products to be protected and thus
localities have an economic and social development.
