PATENTS FOR BREAST CANCER IN BRAZIL AND INDIA
Abstract
Breast cancer is an important issue with regard to women's health, as it has shown increasing rates
of positive diagnostics worldwide. According to data from official websites, in Brazil, breast cancer
has 28% new cases per year and in India 22%. Research in the area has demonstrated a higher
index of patent filing for the fight against this malignant tumor. This article had as objectives to
survey patent applications deposited in the database Espacenet, European Patent Office (EPO),
and in the Bank of data from the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), as well
as to explore the incidence in the female population and health spending in both countries. The
study was exploratory with a quantitative and qualitative approach. There was little investment in
health in both countries, and a higher index of patents for the treatment of breast cancer in terms of
prevention and diagnosis.
