GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS (IGs): INSTRUMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
The Geographical Indications (GIs) are a form of intellectual protection toward the recovery of
traditional knowledge, especially in rural areas. Such protection has led to several improvements in
the processes for obtaining products and services that maintain in the characteristics of the region.
As social inclusion and environmental protection are strongly associated with GIs, this form of
intellectual protection can be also considered strong precursor for sustainable development in some
regions. This study aimed to demonstrate that GIs can be responsible and facilitating economic
development, financial and social development of any country. Thus, it was addressed conceptual
issues and legislation on GIs, the numerous economic, social and environmental factors that bring an IG, the need for organization in the field, and finally the demands for public policies that
encourage the creation of new Brazilian GIs and the development of existing ones.
