GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION IN THE TERRITORY OF SISAL BAHIA: POSSIBILITIES AND PERSPECTIVES
Abstract
The Geographical Indications (GIs) are instituted as a way to protect the products or services that have
become known over time since they are from a particular region or locality. Such protection, in turn, with
regard to the legal sphere, due to the fact Geographical Indications would constitute an instrument of
Industrial Property. The present study aims to investigate the potential of the Territory of Sisal for
Geographical Indications. The methodology used in the research was a qualitative descriptive, where they
sought to prioritize the quality of information. The theoretical foundation of this work was supported by
scientific productions that address geographical indications in the perspective of Intdustrial Property
highlighting their importance to the process of local and regional development. In this way, one can say that
the Sisal (Agave sisalana Pierre) produced in some of the cities belonging to the territory, was identified as a potential request for registration of Geographical Indication, the modality Denomination of Origin (DO),
according Law 9279/96, which deals with industrial property rights in the country.
