FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS: DEFINITIONS AND FRAMEWORK FOR FUTURE RESEARCH
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide a conceptual review about Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). At the end, a frame-work was built which may be useful to organize the effort in future research on FMS´s. The typical equipment present in FMS are: machine tools, movers, handlers, storage structures and transelevators, and inspectors, all automatic. The typical management software includes CAD, CAE, CAM, CAPP and industrial high-reliability networks. The review pointed out that some management techniques can be focused by future research, such as formation of cells, and optimization of routes and picking.
