ETHERIFICATION OF GLYCEROL: AN EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGYL
Abstract
In order to improve the environmental conditions such as reduction of toxic gases from fossil fuels, biodiesel production in Brazil has increased since 2008 with 2% to 7% because of the addition of biodiesel to the mineral diesel, which provides an increase in production crude glycerol coming out of production reactors with biodiesel. The production of glycerol ethers with application to fuel additives is a promising alternative to valorize this by-product. This paper addresses the technological prospecting on the glycerol etherification reactions in the presence of alcohols using acid catalysts and ionic liquids. The following patents databases searches were conducted: National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), European Patent Office (EPO), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Derwent Innovations Index and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The survey was conducted from November 2015 to January 2016, featuring a documentary study. It was observed that the C07 classification code was present in all terms used in the search, and that WIPO is the patent office with the highest number of deposits, while the INPI has a lower number, which indicates the need to perform further studies on this subject in our country, given that it is a government energy policies.
