EDUCATION, COMPANIES AND PATENTS IN BIOTECHNOLOGY IN BRAZIL
Abstract
The great interest in the patents in biotechnology is consequence of the fact of this protection
to be granted in the form of exclusive rights of exploration. In the scientific scope, the patents
are considered an incentive to the innovation, having also allowed the safe revelation of the
knowledge to allow the advance of the research, and, for the companies, result in the
possibility to restrict the diffusion of the innovation and to increase their fields of
performance in the market. This study aimed to map the research undertaken, analyzing the
current situation of the biotechnology, in the academic and entrepreneurial scopes, and the
intellectual property in biotechnology and discussing the importance of this area of the knowledge for the implantation of the innovation in the academic and enterprise sectors.
Prospecting was carried out in the database of Institute Nacional de Propriedade Intelectual
(Brazil) and the European Patent Office. The research of the academic data was carried out
through the websites of agencies that support research and human resources in the country.
The domain and use of the biotechnology require access to advanced technologies already
present in developed countries. In Brazil, these technologies are located in regions where the
academic and technological development is concentrated, as well as for the enterprise sector,
as is the case of the Southeastern and South regions.
