CORRELATION BETWEEN SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS AND PATENTS WITH INDUCED PLURIPOTENT STEM CELLS (iPS): BASIS FOR A TECHNOLOGICAL FORECASTING
Abstract
Reprogramming of somatic cells into a pluripotent cell undifferentiated features an embryonic stem
cell (ESC), is one of the promising breakthroughs in the field of cell biology in the last decade. The
aim of this study was to gather information as a basis for technology foresight on the subject prior
induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) and see if there is a correlation between the number of
scientific publications and the number of patents in that area. We researched patents filed in the
databases EPO ,USPTO and INPI the scientific publications was investigated in database Web of
Science in order to carry out the correlation between the amount of scientific publications and the
number of patent applications filed by year and countries. The World Property Organization
intellectual (WO) followed by the United States and China have the largest numbers of patents
involving iPS. The US leads the number of scientific publications on iPS with 1,679 publications in
the Web of Science database, and China appears as third place with a number 477 published
articles. This result shows a strong correlation in the sense that both the US and China in addition
to having a strong concern about the confidentiality of their research also worry about posting
them to the scientific community.
