CARBONIZATION OF THE BIOMASS OF BABASSU AND POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: A TECHNOLOGICAL PROSPECTING
Abstract
Recently, adding value to the biomass, in general, has been one important aspect of research because it provides a variety of socioeconomic benefits. “Babassu” (scientific name: Orbignya phalerata) is a common native plant species in north-central Brazil. This fruit of babassu is technologically potent, especially coupled with one of the most promising techniques called biomass conversion by carbonization and this way, biomass becomes more added value. The aim of the current study is to perform a trace of research analyzing the already developed and patented results searched with the keywords: carbonization, hydrothermal carbonization, babassu, charcoal, biomass, and combinations of them. The survey was conducted in the web-database of National Institute of Industrial Property of Brazil (INPI) and Derwent Innovations Index.. Also, Scientific articles has been searched with the same keywords in the web-database of articles on Google Scholar and Scopus. The results found in the survey of INPI were unsatisfactory compared to that in Derwent Innovations Index. In conclusion, it is observed that more research is needed to do in order to better understanding and finding new applications of this biomass and related technologies, mainly in Brazil.
