BRAZILIAN INDUSTRIAL COMPANIES GAINS WITH THE ELECTRICITY FREE MARKET
Abstract
The aim of this article was pointing out possibilities of financial and non-financial gains that
Brazilian companies can obtain by migration to the free market of electricity (ACL). The research
method was the multiple case study. Six companies who migrated and two that don't have migrated
to the free market were studied. The free electricity market offers the possibility of exchanging
energy generated by fossil fuel by green energy, with a significant cost reduction. The primary
benefit that companies observe is the expressive cost reduction that migration offers. However,
other benefits have also been observed: possibility of increase production, due to the increase of
hours available; possibility to disable generators, with costly maintenance; possibility of round-theclock
shifts, without stopping the work in the peak-energy time; employee satisfaction with the
reduction of overtime and anticipation of the end of the daily journey; and use of energy of superior
quality than that generated by diesel generator groups. Environmental gains by replacing fossil fuel
by green energy were not recognized by the studied companies.
