BIOPROSPECTION OF Pistia stratiotes L. (ARACEAE): PROJECTION AND USE OF BIOTECHNOLOGICAL POTENTIAL
Abstract
Pistia stratiotes is a floating aquatic macrophytes that develops freely ion the water surface and is
also known in Brazil as alface-d’-água, erva-de-santa-luzia, repolho-d’água e golfo. The aim of
this study was to evaluate how this species is currently used in scientific and technological
development through of a quantitative profile profiling of publications and patent deposits of the
genus Pistia and its single species P. stratiotes. The survey was based on papers a search of
periodicals included in on the Web of Science databases, and four patents databases: The European
Patent Office (ESPACENET), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the United
States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the National Institute of Industrial Property
(INPI) of Brazil. The results demonstrate that the United States USA was is the country that
published more most research with on the specie, with Brazil ranked third in the number of
published papers, behind countries like the USA and India. The data collected surveyed by patents
resulted have a totaled of 116 documents with the term Pistia term and 70 documents with the term
Pistia stratiotes term, considering the total of all the documents found on during the search of all
the databases search.
