APPLICATIONS OF Copaifera L. OIL RESIN IN POPULAR MEDICINE: A TECHNOLOGIC PROSPECTION
Abstract
The use of plants in popular medicine is widespread in Brazil, as an alternative for the treatment of
various diseases, and several statements have been corroborated by the scientific community. It is
known that genus Copaifera L. is extensively used in Brazil to treat various ailments for their antiinflammatory,
antimicrobial, healing action, potential antiseptic, among others. This prospection
was conducted by searching the databases of patent INPI, EPO and USPTO on the basis of
periodic and Web of Science. The largest number of patents relating to the application of L.
Copaifera focuses on the processes area with 144 patents. A prospection of the genus for medical,
therapeutic and pharmaceutical sum 90 patents, and patent classification A61K is the most
recurrent. Brazil has the largest number of scientific articles involving Copaifera L., while the
United States excel in protecting this research. Overall, the prospection shows that the prospect of
technological applications of plants of the genus Copaifera L. in alternative medicine is promising.
