ANACARDIUM OCCIDENTALE L.: PROSPECÇÃO TECNOLÓGICA APLICADA À TECNOLOGIA DE COMPOSTOS BIOATIVOS EM PRODUTOS ALIMENTÍCIOS
Abstract
The worldwide cashew agribusiness generates nearly $ 2.4 billion per year. In Brazil, Northeast region accounts 95% of its production, with currencies up $ 220 million annually. Despite the importance of this agricultural activity, the economic potential remains largely unexplored, particularly due to the use of cashew apple. Besides rich in nutrients, cashews are an important source of bioactive compounds, which can be applied in functional food products. This paper presents a mapping of the potential applications involving cashew and its bioactive compounds based on the development of technological skills represented by patent applications. This research was carried out using Derwent Innovations Index as source of data. Even without favorable geography and climate for cashew production, Japan topped the rankings presented in this study, with 14 orders for Anacardium occidentale keyword and 04 when the term cashew apple was investigated. Federal University of Maranhão is the Brazilian highlighted institution with two patents related to the pharmaceutical area. The only national patent regarding cashew bioactive compounds was filed by the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2009 and details a laboratory method for analysis of tannins extracted from beverages like cashew juice. Results show a promising area for development of Brazilian patents related to cashews and their bioactive compounds, now currently operated by non-producing countries of this fruit.
