This paper seeks to show how the geographical indications emerged, demonstrating its potential as a tool for regional and local development from the empowerment of populations from the individual freedoms. With great potential for promoting the development of products and processes of a cultural property and traditional knowledge of the localities, the Geographical Indication - GI - is one of the forms of protection, provided in the Brazilian Industrial Property Act, of intangible products and market principles. Established its developmental potential, is demonstrated through a case study of a Geographical Indication Potential in Seridó of Rio Grande do Norte, as the local production of embroidery, enables local and regional socio-economic development, and that order granting the GI would increase this developmental process.
